GPs in England can now prescribe Mounjaro weight loss injections to adults who meet strict NHS criteria. Eligible patients must have a BMI of 40+ (or 37.5+ for minority ethnic groups) or be living with four out of five conditions: high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, or heart/vascular disease.
Due to high demand and limited GP capacity, the rollout will prioritise those most in need. Mounjaro, originally for type 2 diabetes, can help users lose up to 20% of their body weight by reducing appetite.
Patients who qualify will also receive additional support, such as exercise guidance and dietary advice. People are urged not to contact their GP unless they meet the criteria. For more details, check your local Integrated Care Board (ICB) website.
NHS leaders stress the importance of safe access through GPs rather than buying medication online, but acknowledge that GP resources may not meet demand. Anyone concerned about their weight should discuss NHS support options with a healthcare professional.
