Mattel has introduced its first Barbie doll with type 1 diabetes, developed in collaboration with the nonprofit Breakthrough T1D. This initiative aims to enhance representation and inclusivity, allowing children with the condition to identify with a role model.
The doll features a continuous glucose monitor (CGM) secured with heart-shaped pink medical tape, an insulin pump, and a mobile phone displaying a CGM app to track blood sugar levels. Her outfit-a blue polka-dot top and skirt-symbolizes diabetes awareness, and she carries a pastel blue purse for essentials like snacks or medical supplies.
This release marks a significant step in Mattel’s commitment to inclusivity, following previous additions to the Fashionistas line that include dolls with various disabilities and backgrounds. Industry leaders and advocates have praised the doll for normalising type 1 diabetes and providing children with a tangible representation of their experiences.
